How to Close the Stand Ring on Apple Watch Every Single Time

How often do you close all three of your Activity rings on Apple Watch? One of the hardest to close is the Stand ring if you’re not aware of reminders or moving enough while standing.

According to Apple, the Stand ring “shows hours in which you’ve stood and moved for at least a minute.” In order to close your Stand ring, you need to be “standing up and moving around for at least 1 minute during 12 different hours in the day.”

The Stand ring should be renamed to “move for one minute every 50 minutes”, as otherwise people think they can achieve their goals just by standing.

The Stand alert will pop up on your watch at 10 minutes before the top of every hour, if Apple Watch senses you’ve been inactive for 50 minutes.

There are times when you don’t have a moment to walk around for a minute while standing—so how can you register a Stand goal for each hour?

Swing Your Arms Front to Back

One way to ‘hack’ the Stand ring is by standing up and then swinging both arms front to back about 15-20 times. By doing this, your Stand goal for each hour will close every single time.

It can also help loosen up your shoulders and relieve tension in your arms if you work at a computer all day. Heck, you could even do jumping jacks, shadow box, or burpees if you want to.

Use the Activity Digital Watch Face

With watchOS 3, Apple Watch gained new watch faces. Activity Digital has changed how I’ve managed to close my Activity Rings every single day.

Using the Activity Digital watch face has helped me achieve my current 24 day ring-closing streak (it started with the Ring in the New Year Challenge and I kept going).

The digital read out of your Move, Exercise and Stand goal provides instant measurable feedback, versus just visual ring indicators. It’ll make you more aware of closing your Standing goal.

Keep an Eye on your Hourly Stand Tracker

Another benefit of the Activity Digital watch face is a large touch target to jump to your Activity details. From here, you can monitor your hourly Stand goal and view a ‘flashing’ bar if you haven’t reached your goal for the hour. Sometimes it’s easy to forget where you’re at in the day so checking it frequently will help.

Wear Apple Watch First Thing in the Morning

The earlier you wake up, the more hours in a day you’ll have to reach your 12 standing goals. So this means don’t waste any time in putting on your Apple Watch when you’re getting ready in the morning.

By slapping on Apple Watch first thing, you get a head start on Stand goals, so you don’t have to stay up late if you’re desperately trying to max out after a busy day. That includes wearing it in the shower, as you can also gain a quick Stand goal that way too (recommended for Apple Watch Series 2; although Series 0 and 1 should work fine, at your own risk of course).

Closing all your Activity rings is a great feeling, and by coupling in daily exercise, meeting Move and Exercise goals can be very simple (I’m going for runs, playing ice hockey, riding my trainer and playing squash at the moment). Throw in our Stand ‘hack’, and you’ll be a ring-closing maestro in no time, ready to trash talk your docile, sloth-like, Netflix-binging friends and family.

How often are you closing all three of your Activity rings on Apple Watch?

But I still want to see 18 months of solid rings from the calendar layout as proof 😛

I’ve been doing pretty well at hitting my Move goal every day since August, and I don’t usually have a problem with Stand, although there are a few days here and there that I’ve had to get off the couch for a post-11pm walk around the living room 🙂

Exercise can be a trickier one to hit in the winter, but I’ve actually found that I get three minutes every time I make a cup of coffee thanks to my manual hand grinder ????… So I figure if I drink 10 cups of coffee a day, I should be able to meet my exercise goals every day, right? ????

Haha I’m gonna vote yes for 10 cups/day, that’ll get you moving whether you like it or not 😛

Yup, 10 cups of coffee should put you close to the 12/12 stand goal!

How many calories do you guys try to achieve? I mean, I can achieve 250 cals no problem, but 500 is a bit harder, especially on really busy days at the office. 🙁

Btw, NONE of my friends has an Apple watch. I have NO workout buddies. They’re all on Fitbit. Kinda sad. 🙁

Heh, I’m in the same boat. My only two workout buddies are a work colleague in NYC and an old professional colleague that I stumbled across on Twitter (and in the comment threads here) but I haven’t actually seen in person in years.

We should start an iPhone in Canada workout group ????

Just want to add that while I have no problem with this, it’s important for folks to be aware that you’ll have to share your e-mail addresses with everybody in the group if we all want to share, as there’s no “group” sharing — everybody has to be added to everybody else individually.

Also, if you decide to participate in the “cheers and jeers” aspect of responding to people when they achieve goals, you’ll be exposing your iMessage address in the process, which depending on how iMessage is configured, could likely be your cell phone number.

FWIW, my e-mail address isn’t a hugely kept secret anyway for anybody who wants to be bothered looking for it…. I already contacted Gary directly, but rather than juggling email messages around, anybody else who wants to add me to our little Activity Sharing group can just put my first and last name together with an @ in between and a “.ca” on the end ??

I’ve lowered mine into the 300 range for the winter, as I just don’t get out as much. However, back in the summer I was easily working up to above 500 (I just kept going with the recommended increase each week) as I’d go for “walking therapy” every day ????

My Move goal is at 340 calories. Haven’t changed it manually, just going with the Watch’s suggestions. It’ll go up in the summer when I start riding outside again.

For me the hardest ring to close is the Move ring – I’m at 490 calories. Gym days are easy to close all three rings, non gym days are a bit harder. I got my Series 2 for Christmas. I got the ring in the new year challenge during the first week and then worked towards the January monthly move goal achievement. Was so happy when I got that on Tuesday. I’m going for February now.

Nice. 490 is definitely hard to close on a non-gym day. Keeping a streak alive definitely makes me more motivated to fit in a workout.

I thought I was a bit of a softie because my goal was less than 1000 calories per day. It has fluctuated from 600 to 800 per day for the past 19 months and is currently at 800. I haven’t missed the standing goal in who knows how long and it appears I missed the exercise goal once in January. There have been one or maybe two weeks where I’ve gotten past 800 every day but I usually miss it at least two or three times per week. I always figured it should be a goal, not something you always hit.

comment image

I had a high of 1101 on the 10th, with only 352 on the 12th. I guess I was a bit wore out. 😉

It looks like boxing week I got all three all seven days, but one day it was only 803 and another it was exactly 800

Good job. I wish I was disciplined enough to strive to get into that kind of shape! ????

I have a colleague who treats his goal this way as well — something to strive for but not always reach, as opposed to something to hit every day. I guess it really depends on one’s lifestyle and how much you’re trying to get into shape, but it’s also worth keeping in mind that the Activity app will award badges for exceeding your goal by 200%, 300%, or 400% (and possibly more than that, 400% is the highest I’ve ever done), so I tend to keep my goal challenging but achievable to keep me motivated — it’s rewarding to hit it each day — and then get the extra pat on the back when I go off and do something above and beyond, like a 10km power walk, and get a 300% or 400% badge ????

That’s a good point. I have gotten the 200% award and I think I came within about 100 calories of getting the 300% award, so I guess if I lowered it a bit, I could try to get those. Like Gary mentioned, I have followed the watch’s suggestion for the most part, usually adding in a few to try to make me work a bit harder. Doing a bit more research over the past year and a half, I found that my low weekly goal that lasted more than one week was 550, and it has been slowly creeping back up to the current 800, which it has been since November 21, 2016.

Yeah, I generally followed the suggestions as well until winter set in, as all of my workout and exercise activity is outdoors and therefore based on good weather. Mine crept up into the 500s, but in early November I dropped it back down into the 300-400 range, which is more achievable when I’m not getting out as much. Although I’ve still had nice days where I’ve doubled it, those are the exceptions. I expect when the weather gets nicer it will go right back up.

Damn I’m so late to this discussion..anyway, I’m a heavy Apple Watch user. I hit my 3 ring goal EVERYDAY. I’ve been past 500 move goals since last September 2016. I love completing my rings because I’m an active gym goer. I usually set an 800 calorie burn goal daily.comment image

But it is true what they say about improving over time though. I started out with a 600 move goal and overtime I just kept upping the ante.
